About this deal

Gabby was offered a babysitting job that night and decided to take it instead of going to the dance. Taylor Jenkins Reid has written a poignant and heartfelt exploration of love and commitment in the absence of shared time that asks, what does it take to be the love of someone's life?

if there really is such a person as “The One” then shouldn’t Hannah have finished up with the same guy in both scenarios like Gabby did?The two realities shown are quite complex — as life naturally is — so there’s a lot going on in this book.

Liking a specific type of food is not a personality trait and it definitely doesn’t need to be mentioned as many times as it does in this book. Hannah was a wonderful main character who felt so authentic, and although both endings veer towards the happy, neither one provides a perfectly smooth path.

I thought it was going to be like magical realism, where she gets to experience both realities and maybe have to choose one. A non-controversial issue I had with it is that I don’t think the sliding doors moment is really in the spirit of a sliding doors moment.

It’s entirely possible that every time we make a decision, there is a version of us out there somewhere who made a different choice. It held a unique story-line, but this is certainly not surprising coming from this innovative author. There's heartache and mess contained within these pages, but Maybe in Another Life is mostly a mature coming-of-age story about fate and choices and finding happiness when you're around thirty and still have nothing figured out in your life. I appreciated this aspect of the tale and it did give me a chance to reflect heavily on the decisions we make, as well as the possibility of living a very different life through a rather subtle choice.I mean, you as a reader can choose which life you liked better for her, but I feel like ultimately, a lot of the same things happened in both realities and the things that were different did not feel necessarily better. I found my emotions shifting between each reality and wow, it’s definitely not something I experience with every book. Also, the female friendship between Gabby and her was so well written – almost an homage to all of the Gabby’s in our lives, the friends who are there no matter what, and who keep us afloat when life goes south.
