About this deal

The cherry on top of this deliciously dark read is a cinematic, gut-punch of an ending—the kind of finale that feels built for the big screen, and more than makes up for any slower start that some readers may find this book to have. When the six friends are reunited, they will be forced to confront what happened that night—and the years’ worth of secrets each of them would do anything to keep hidden. I loved the writing style with the jumping back and forth in time, and I love that it’s mostly told in Jessica’s POV but we also get singular chapters from some of the other characters.

Told in racing dual timelines, with a dark campus setting and a darker look at friendship, love, obsession, and ambition, In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is an addictive, propulsive read you won't be able to put down. Most of her former group from the East House Seven would be there, save two: Heather who was dead, and Jack who was accused of killing her just prior to graduation. Perfect for fans of dark academia, the well-drawn characters will remind many of their own college days. I also was actually a huge fan of the love triangle that was happening 😅 it’s been a while since I’ve read an interesting love triangle. The promising premise centered on 10th anniversary reunion of university students which also a reason to drag them to the murder scene to solve the cold case of Heather’s brutal killing by stabbing 17 times with a scissor in her dorm room ( I still have conflicts about book’s name as you see the murder weapon is not knife but scissors ! What has this toxic enneagram 3 motherf*cker ever done in her life to make someone think she's got emotional depth? I very easily visualized walking the grounds of Duquette University, and even found myself battling a deep sense of nostalgia for the beginning of my college days at a similar institution – very well done Winstead! When one of the girls in her tight group of 7 friends was brutally murdered, the blame was immediately placed on her boyfriend.

But ten years after the murder of one of the East House Seven, the unbreakable bonds may be hiding fractured secrets of a group bound not by loyalty but by fear.

This reunion at Duquette, then, is more than just a chance for old friends to catch up—it’s also a chance for someone with close ties to the group to unmask a killer in their midst. In Jess’ senior year at the university, one of the members of her friend group, Heather, was brutally murdered. For a second I wasn’t sure how I felt about it, but then I thought how it made sense with the breadcrumbs that were scattered throughout. Glory days, unbreakable friendships, all-night parties and a belief that the best in life is ahead of you.
