About this deal

I didn't find this as fulfilling as his previous writings, I think because of the genre more than anything, but the story itself was good.

At times this almost felt like the story was verging on a horror story but with the obvious sci-fi leaning. But after getting off to a great start, in which a family overcomes grievous odds to make it to Antarctica by supertanker only to get caught in an offshore logjam and risk missing the aliens' deadline, the novel loses its heart and narrative sweep to stiffly written scenes and didactic commentaries. I’d’ve thought it’d be top of most peoples’ conversation topics but I get it - the aliens aren’t really the point, they’re just the story catalyst. So, the plot follows a few central characters as they travel by ship, stopping in Portugal and Mauritania, before arriving in Antarctica. g., alien invasion, genetic engineering, and the hardships of Antarctic and post-apocalyptic life, to name just a few. We do not learn how this was done or the problems associated with strangers cooperating and surviving in this bleak, cold, uninhabited wilderness.

The situation at McMurdo at the end of the novel also suggests that there is more to the story, which may come to light in a second instalment. This introduces a major theme of the novel – the use of genetic engineering to create a truly cold-tolerant type of human. So I then thought we'd spend the rest of the book dealing with daily struggles of life in Antarctica over the days, months and eventually years of forming a new society.
