Canon CAN1001 15 x 50 Image Stabilising All Weather Binoculars, Black
About this deal
The Pentax 12 x 50’s I have and use with a trigger grip monopod set up, serve me well but as we all do, I was thinking the Canon’s could beat this in “hand held” mode ? With the supplied regular alkaline batteries, I noticed that the image "snapped" or twitched a bit every few seconds. It still helps to be stable positioned, but the stabilization gets rid of all the high frequency jitters and you heartbeat etc. I had one many years ago and sold it, but I have been re-converted, and should have listened to Kimmo many years ago.
I have also used a pair of Russian made image stabilised binos and they gave me the impression that the floor was falling away under me.The views in the 15x70 were very nice, but the views in the Canon were truly magnificent with sharper stars, ultra-flat field, many well-defined faint stars, and absolute steadiness. I would say that the IS 15x50 are more suited for advanced users with experience of holding steady none-stabilized binoculars of similar size.
Again, it was comparable in sharpness and chromatic control to my APM 100mm APO ED binos at this low power (and I was free from those irritating off-axis reflections we know about with the APM BT's when sweeping). In daylight however the optics show a little spurious colour, yellow/green or blue/violet when viewing a sharp edge against a high contrast background. This makes my observing sessions fast, easy and simple, with high degree of movement freedom which I value a lot. On the base of the monocular there is a tripod mount that fits all standard tripods and it is supplied with a table top mini pod. Spot your subject easily and experience a beautiful 61° apparent wide field of view with clear, flat, low distortion from edge to edge thanks to the porro II prism optics and doublet field flattener element.
